1.tease: make fun of (a person or animal)
¡¡¡¡ Examples:At school,the other chilldren always teased me because I was fat.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ Sam' sister used to tease him because he was overweight.

2.instead of: in place of
¡¡¡¡ Examples:If I hadn't got a cold I'd be working instead of lying here in bed.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ He studies in the evening instead of during the day.

3.miserable: very unhappy
¡¡¡¡Examples:Their living conditions were miserable in the little mountain village.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Factory workers during the 18th century led miserable lives.

4. turning point: a point in time at which a very important change takes place
¡¡¡¡Example:The war is the turning point in the history of all mankind.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ The fall of the Berlin wall marked a turning point in East-West relations.

5. portion: part or share of something large
¡¡¡¡Examples:A portion of the field was allotted to the sports club.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She herself must bear some portion of the blame for what happens to her.

6. deprive (of): take away from; prevent from using
¡¡¡¡Examples:She has been deprived of sight for some years.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡These children are deprived of equal educational opportunities.

7. healthy: (1)likely to produce good health
¡¡¡¡Examples:I'm trying to eat a healthier diet now,with less fruit and sugar.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Smith found wood chopping a healthy pastime.¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡(2)having good health
¡¡¡¡ Examples:Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables will help you stay healthy.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ He lived to be ninety-eight,the healthiest man in the town.¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

8. combine: have at the same time; (cause to) come together
¡¡¡¡Examples:To succeed as an artist one must combine talent and discipline.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Some films combine education with recreation.

9.healthful: likely to produce good health
¡¡¡¡Examples:Regular exercise is very healthful.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He carefully chose a healthful diet.

10. solution: an act or way of finding an answer to a difficulty or problem
¡¡¡¡Examples:It was a very good solution for my difficulty.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The solution to the problem required many hours.

11. trial and error: trying different way of doing something until one finds the best way
¡¡¡¡Examples:He found the best way of driving through London by trial and error.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He learned how to cook by trial and error.

12. modify: change (something) slightly esp. to improve it or make it less
¡¡¡¡Examples:You¡¯ll have to modify the height of the table to make it fit.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡These plans must be modified if they are to be used successfully.

13.favorite: something or someone that is loved above all others
¡¡¡¡ Examples:How clever of you to buy chocolate chip cookies£­they are my favorites.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ I like all her books but this one is my favorite.

14. deserve: be worthy of
¡¡¡¡Examples:A forced kindness deserves no thanks.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡His first play deserved the criticism it received.

15. ups and downs: good and bad periods
¡¡¡¡Examples:Life is full of ups and downs.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Their marriage has gone through ups and downs.

16. keep...in mind: remember
¡¡¡¡Examples:You have to be home by 11 o¡¯clock. Keep that in mind, Bob.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡You should keep it in mind that he is no longer a young man.

17. in tune with: in agreement or emotional harmony
¡¡¡¡Examples:His ideas were in tune with the period in which he lived.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The design of the house is in tune with modern architecture.

18. set one¡¯s mind to: give all one¡¯s attention to doing (something)
¡¡¡¡Examples:If she sets her mind to finishing the work today, she can certainly do so.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡After hearing the sad nwes, John could not set his mind to his work that afternoon.

19. out of reach: beyond somebody¡¯s ability, authority, influence, etc.
¡¡¡¡Example:That style of life is out of reach¡ªforget it.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ The apples are on a branch just out of reach.

20. priority: the state, quality, position, or right of being first in position or earlier in time
¡¡¡¡Examples:They insist that the right to live should take priority over all other considerations.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Fire engines and ambulances have priority over other traffic.

21.be inclined to: be likely to;tend to
¡¡¡¡Examples:Many language teachers are inclined to talk too much.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He did not seem inclined to work.
